Equity and Inclusion: How to Be a More Welcoming Destination
JW Marriott Austin
Is your destination welcoming to all visitors without discrimination? In this session you will hear inspirational stories of how organizations are implementing diversity, equity and inclusion best practices internally, which has led to expanded outreach to marginalized and minority communities. Presenters will focus on the importance for all travelers to feel welcome in our destinations and discuss how and why DMOs can start conversations around this issue. Please be aware that this session may cause some discomfort but will equip us to better welcome visitors with different identities.
- Definition: “Diversity” tells us who is in the room, “inclusion” means those in the room are heard, and “equity” means those in the room have the things they need to thrive. Thus, the term “DEI” = diversity, equity, inclusion. And to be clear, equity doesn’t mean equality.
- Creating an inclusive workplace is a work in progress, and engaging, interesting training that encourages employees to learn more about these issues is a great place to start!
- Increasing awareness around gender, race, and intersecting identities that people hold, allows the travel industry to thrive!
