Daniel K. Nahoopii is a respected tourism leader with over 25 years of experience in strategic research and sustainable destination management. As Lead, Industry Data and Research for JLL Global Tourism & Destination Advisory, he plays a key role in developing future-focused strategies that enhance global communities and economies.
Previously, Nahoopii served as Interim President & CEO of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, where he led the agency through a crucial transition, managing a $70 million budget. His leadership was instrumental in rebuilding international tourism markets and implementing a revitalization strategy after the Maui wildfires. He emphasized destination stewardship, balancing cultural preservation with economic growth.
Nahoopii’s prior role as Executive VP at SMS Research & Marketing Services involved overseeing large-scale research for tourism boards, including Hawaii and Fiji. He helped develop Hawaii’s Destination Management Action Plans and worked on projects related to indigenous tourism, economic impact, and community well-being. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated a travel verification process at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, showcasing his adaptability to emerging challenges.
With an MBA focused on Japanese business from the University of Hawai‘i and degrees in Industrial and Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University, Nahoopii also has a specialized certificate in sustainable tourism. He has served as President and Chair of the Travel and Tourism Research Association, further cementing his leadership in the field.
